sculls

Light rowing boats

Sculls are a pair of short oars, one held in each hand, used to propel a small boat.

The rower sits facing backward and pulls both oars simultaneously.

Sculling is also a rowing sport using these oars, distinct from sweep rowing where each rower handles a single longer oar.

To scull is to row in this manner: She sculled across the quiet lake at dawn.
