sawyer
Lumber mill worker
A sawyer is a person whose work is sawing timber into boards or planks.
The term dates from when lumber was cut by hand, often with two workers operating a long saw over a pit.
Sawyer also names a tree or log caught in a river, bobbing up and down with the current—a hazard to navigation.
The sawyer worked the mill from dawn to dusk. (Capitalized Sawyer is a surname.)
