sawpit
Timber cutting ditch
A sawpit is a pit over which timber is laid for sawing, with one worker standing below in the pit and another above.
The arrangement allows two people to operate a long two-handled saw, cutting logs lengthwise into planks.
Before powered sawmills, sawpits were essential to lumber production.
The worker below—the pitman—got the worse end of the job, showered with sawdust.
