sand bar

Shallow underwater mound

A sand bar is a ridge of sand built up by currents in a river, lake, or ocean.

Sand bars form in shallow water and may be exposed at low tide or remain just beneath the surface—a hazard to boats.

The kids waded out to the sand bar.

Also spelled as one word: sandbar.
