downcutting
Stream carves downward
Downcutting is the geological process by which a river or stream erodes its bed, carving deeper into the underlying rock or sediment.
This vertical erosion creates canyons, gorges, and V-shaped valleys over time: The Colorado River's downcutting formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.
The term contrasts with lateral erosion, which widens a channel rather than deepening it.
