feather stitch

Branching blanket stitch

Feather stitch is an embroidery technique that creates a branching, fern-like pattern of diagonal stitches alternating from side to side along a central line.

It's used decoratively on quilts, crazy quilts especially, and to embellish seams on garments.

The finished effect resembles a spine with angled ribs: She worked a row of feather stitch down each seam of the crazy quilt.
