darning
Weaving over holes
Darning is the act of mending holes or worn areas in fabric, typically by weaving thread back and forth across the damaged spot to recreate the textile's structure.
The technique is most associated with repairing socks and other knitted garments, though it works on woven fabrics too.
A darning needle is long with a large eye to accommodate yarn or heavy thread, and a darning egg or mushroom provides a curved surface to stretch fabric over while working.
She spent the evening darning socks by the fire.
