fur seals
Thick-coated marine mammals
Fur seals are eared seals prized for their dense, luxurious underfur.
Unlike true seals, they have external ear flaps and can rotate their hind flippers to walk on land.
They gather in large breeding colonies on rocky shores and islands.
Fur seals were hunted nearly to extinction before international protections.
