rookeries

Penguin nesting grounds

Rookeries is the plural of rookery, a breeding colony of birds—originally rooks, the crow-like birds that nest communally in treetops.

The term extends to colonies of other gregarious animals: seal rookeries along the coast, penguin rookeries in Antarctica.

Historically, rookery also meant a crowded, run-down urban tenement, suggesting the dense, noisy character of bird colonies.
