murres

Black-and-white auks

Murres are seabirds of the auk family, found in northern oceans.

Black and white with pointed bills, they nest in dense colonies on cliff ledges and spend most of their lives at sea.

The two species—common murre and thick-billed murre—dive deep to catch fish.

The cliffs were crowded with nesting murres.
