Hanzi

Chinese written characters

Hanzi are Chinese characters—the logographic writing system used in Chinese for thousands of years.

Each character represents a morpheme or word rather than a sound, so the same hanzi can be read differently across Chinese dialects.

Japanese borrowed many hanzi (calling them kanji), as did Korean and Vietnamese historically.

Learning hanzi takes years of practice.
