rock fall

Cliff debris collapse

A rock fall is a mass of rocks that has fallen from a cliff, slope, or mountainside, or the event of such falling.

The term applies both to the sudden collapse and to the resulting debris: A rock fall blocked the trail.

In geology and mountaineering, rock falls are distinguished from landslides by involving detached stones rather than flowing earth.
