residential school
Live-in educational facility
A residential school is a government-funded boarding school, particularly the institutions in Canada and the United States that forcibly removed Indigenous children from their families to assimilate them into Euro-American culture.
Children were often forbidden to speak their languages or practice traditions, and many suffered abuse and neglect.
The term carries heavy historical weight: survivors of residential schools, the legacy of residential schools.
In other contexts, residential school simply means any boarding school where students live on campus.
