reformatories
Juvenile detention facilities
Reformatories are institutions where young offenders are sent with the aim of reforming their behavior rather than simply punishing them.
The term reflects a 19th-century belief that juvenile criminals could be rehabilitated through discipline, education, and moral instruction.
Though largely replaced by terms like juvenile detention centers or youth correctional facilities, reformatories historically occupied a middle ground between prisons and schools.
The judge sent the teenage thief to a reformatory instead of adult prison.
