poor laws

Indigent relief statutes

Poor laws were statutes in England and later Britain governing public relief for the destitute, from the sixteenth century through the early twentieth.

The term encompasses various acts that established parish-based systems of aid, workhouses, and distinctions between the "deserving" and "undeserving" poor.

The Victorian poor laws made poverty itself seem criminal.
