referrer

One who directs

A referrer is someone or something that refers—directs attention or sends onward.

In everyday use, a referrer might be a person who recommends you for a job or refers you to a specialist.

In web technology, the referrer is the URL of the page that linked you to your current page, tracked by browsers and analytics: The referrer showed visitors came from a social media post.

Also spelled referer in the HTTP specification, due to a misspelling that became standard.
