redox reactions

Electron exchange processes

Redox reactions are chemical reactions involving the transfer of electrons between substances.

One substance loses electrons (oxidation) while another gains them (reduction)—the two processes always occur together.

The term combines "reduction" and "oxidation." Redox reactions power batteries, cause rust, and drive cellular respiration: Photosynthesis is a redox reaction that converts light energy into chemical energy.
