NC-17

Not for children

NC-17 is a movie rating assigned by the Motion Picture Association indicating that no one 17 or under should be admitted to see the film.

It replaced the X rating in 1990 to distinguish serious adult films from pornography, which had co-opted the X designation.

Films receive NC-17 ratings for extreme violence, sexual content, or other material deemed inappropriate for minors.

The director refused to cut scenes, so the film was released NC-17.
