quarter moon
Half-lit lunar phase
A quarter moon is the lunar phase when half the moon's visible face is illuminated—occurring twice per lunar cycle as the moon waxes toward or wanes from full.
The name refers to the moon being one quarter or three quarters through its cycle, not to how much surface is lit.
The quarter moon rose just before midnight.
