waning gibbous
Moon after full
A waning gibbous is a moon phase occurring after the full moon, when more than half the lunar face remains illuminated but the lit portion shrinks each night.
The moon rises later and later, visible through much of the night and into morning.
The waning gibbous hung low in the predawn sky.
