life stage
Age-defined chapter
A life stage is a distinct period in an organism's development or existence, marked by characteristic physical, behavioral, or social features.
For humans, life stages include infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.
For other organisms, the term often describes dramatically different forms: The caterpillar and butterfly are different life stages of the same insect.
Marketing and social science use life stages to describe phases defined by circumstances rather than biology: empty nesters, new parents, retirees.
