protozoon

Microscopic one-celled organism

Protozoon is the singular of protozoa—microscopic single-celled organisms that live in water, soil, or as parasites.

The term is largely confined to older scientific writing; modern usage favors protozoan for both singular and plural, or simply protozoa even when referring to one organism.
