prologues

Books' opening scenes

Prologues is the plural of prologue, an introductory section that precedes the main body of a work.

In literature and drama, a prologue sets the scene, provides background, or frames what follows: The prologues to Shakespeare's plays were often spoken directly to the audience.

By extension, any preliminary event can be a prologue to what comes after: The skirmishes were prologues to full-scale war.
