epigraphs
Introductory book quotes
Epigraphs are short quotations or phrases placed at the beginning of a book, chapter, or section, suggesting a theme or setting a tone for what follows.
A novel might open with an epigraph from Shakespeare; each chapter might have its own.
Separately, an epigraph is an inscription on a building, statue, or monument.
