first president
Nation's original executive
The first president is the inaugural holder of a presidential office, most often referring to George Washington, who served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797.
The phrase appears in discussions of national founding: Washington set precedents as the first president.
Other nations have their own first presidents, but without qualification, the term defaults to Washington in American English.
