pre-dreadnoughts
Pre-modern armored warships
Pre-dreadnoughts are battleships built before HMS Dreadnought launched in 1906.
That British ship's revolutionary design—uniform heavy guns and steam turbine propulsion—rendered all earlier battleships obsolete overnight.
Pre-dreadnoughts had mixed-caliber armaments and slower engines.
The term is retroactive; before 1906, they were simply battleships.
