dreadnoughts

Early twentieth-century battleships

Dreadnoughts were a class of early 20th-century battleships that made all previous warships obsolete overnight.

Named after HMS *Dreadnought* (1906), they featured uniform heavy guns and steam turbine propulsion.

The term now applies to anything formidable or revolutionary in its field: The new stadium was a dreadnought of modern architecture.
