battle line
Where armies clash
A battle line is a military formation where troops are arranged for combat, or the front where opposing forces engage.
Figuratively, it marks a point of conflict or division in any dispute: Battle lines were drawn over the proposed budget cuts.
The plural battle lines is more common than the singular.
