greenback

Slang for dollar

A greenback is a piece of U.S. paper currency, named for the green ink on the reverse side.

The term dates to Civil War–era banknotes but remains common informal usage: I've got a few greenbacks in my wallet.

In the plural, greenbacks means cash generally: He's always chasing greenbacks.
