fiscal policy
Taxing and spending
Fiscal policy is government use of taxation and spending to influence the economy.
Governments may cut taxes or increase spending to stimulate growth during recessions, or raise taxes and reduce spending to cool inflation.
The term contrasts with monetary policy, which works through interest rates and money supply: The administration favored fiscal policy over monetary policy to address the downturn.
