Royal Commission
Monarch-ordered formal inquiry
A Royal Commission is an official public inquiry appointed by a head of state or government to investigate a matter of significant public concern.
Common in Commonwealth countries like Australia, Canada, and the UK, these commissions have broad powers to compel testimony and examine documents: The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse uncovered decades of cover-ups.
They produce reports with recommendations but cannot themselves prosecute or legislate.
