Shiny buzzing pest
A bluebottle is a large fly with a metallic blue abdomen, commonly found buzzing around decaying matter and garbage.
In British and Australian usage, bluebottle also refers to the Portuguese man-of-war—a jellyfish-like marine creature with a painful sting: I got stung by a bluebottle at the beach.
In older British slang, a bluebottle was a police officer, from the blue uniform.
