hydroid

Tiny marine polyp

A hydroid is a small, typically colonial marine animal related to jellyfish and corals.

Most hydroids grow in branching, plant-like formations attached to rocks, shells, or seaweed, with individual polyps connected by shared tissue.

Some species alternate between attached polyp and free-swimming medusa stages.

The term also works as an adjective describing things resembling or relating to these organisms: hydroid colonies, hydroid polyps.
