poet laureate
Nation's official bard
A poet laureate is an officially appointed poet who holds an honorary position, typically designated by a government or institution.
In the United States, the position is appointed by the Library of Congress; in the United Kingdom, the role has historically been a lifetime appointment by the monarch.
The poet laureate may be expected to compose verses for state occasions or to promote poetry more broadly.
She was named poet laureate in 2019.
