pockets

Pants' small compartments

Pockets are small pouches sewn into clothing for carrying items—keys, coins, a phone.

The word extends to any small enclosed space or isolated area: pockets of resistance, air pockets.

To pocket something is to put it in your pocket, or to take it for yourself, often dishonestly: He pocketed the change.

In billiards, pockets are the holes at the edges of the table.

Something in your pocket is under your control; out of pocket means paying personally or, informally, unavailable.
