world soul

Earth's animating spirit

World soul is a philosophical concept holding that the universe is animated by a single, unified consciousness or life force—a soul pervading all existence just as an individual soul supposedly pervades a body.

The idea appears in Plato, Neoplatonism, and various mystical traditions.

Also called *anima mundi* (Latin).

Some Romantics believed poetry could tap into the world soul.
