aspiration pneumonia

Swallowed-wrong lung illness

Aspiration pneumonia is lung infection caused by inhaling foreign material—typically food, liquid, saliva, or stomach contents—into the airways.

It occurs most often in people with impaired swallowing or reduced consciousness: stroke patients, those under anesthesia, or people who vomit while intoxicated.

The aspirated material introduces bacteria and triggers inflammation in the lungs.
