playbook

Coach's tactical reference

A playbook is a collection of strategies, tactics, or standard procedures.

Originally from American football, where it contains diagrams of offensive and defensive plays, the term now applies broadly to any systematic approach: the political playbook, the corporate playbook.

To run the same playbook is to use familiar tactics; to throw out the playbook is to improvise.
