platens
Typewriter paper supports
Platens are the flat surfaces in printing presses and typewriters that press paper against type or keys.
In a letterpress, the platen pushes paper firmly against inked type to create an impression.
The term extends to similar pressing surfaces in other machinery—the flat bed of a scanner, the surface beneath fabric in a screen-printing setup: The t-shirt sits on the platen while ink is forced through the screen.
