pilot fish

Shark's striped companion

A pilot fish is a small striped fish that swims alongside sharks and other large marine animals, feeding on parasites and scraps.

The name comes from the old belief that they guided larger fish to food.

Figuratively, a pilot fish is someone who attaches themselves to a powerful person, benefiting from the association: He was just a pilot fish for the mob boss.
