remoras

Clingy ocean freeloaders

Remoras are fish equipped with a modified dorsal fin that acts as a suction disk, allowing them to attach themselves to sharks, whales, sea turtles, and other large marine animals.

They hitch rides across vast distances while feeding on parasites and scraps from their hosts.

This commensal relationship—benefiting the remora without significantly harming the host—has made remoras a symbol of opportunistic attachment.

The remora clung to the underside of the manta ray.
