sulfides

Rotten egg chemicals

Sulfides are chemical compounds containing sulfur bonded to a metal or other element.

In chemistry, sulfide refers specifically to the S²⁻ ion: hydrogen sulfide, iron sulfide.

Many sulfide minerals are important ores—galena (lead sulfide) and pyrite (iron sulfide) among them.

Sulfides often produce the characteristic rotten-egg smell associated with sulfur compounds.
