permanent residency
Green card status
Permanent residency is the legal status of being authorized to live indefinitely in a country where one is not a citizen.
A permanent resident can work, own property, and access most benefits, but typically cannot vote or hold certain government positions.
In the U.S., permanent residents carry a "green card": She obtained permanent residency after five years on a work visa.
