passive smoking
Bystander tobacco exposure
Passive smoking is the involuntary inhalation of smoke from other people's cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
Also called secondhand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke.
The term emerged as research established health risks to nonsmokers exposed to others' smoke: Passive smoking increases the risk of lung cancer in nonsmokers.
The concept drove smoking bans in public spaces.
