sidestream
Off the mainstream
Sidestream describes smoke that drifts from the burning end of a cigarette rather than being inhaled and exhaled by the smoker.
Sidestream smoke is a major component of secondhand smoke and contains higher concentrations of certain toxins than mainstream smoke.
The term extends to anything flowing alongside or diverging from a main current: sidestream revenue, sidestream negotiations.
