extinction event

Species-ending catastrophe

An extinction event is a period in Earth's history when a significant proportion of species die out in a geologically short time.

The term usually refers to mass extinctions like the one that killed the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

Scientists recognize five major extinction events in the fossil record, with some arguing we're now in a sixth, human-caused one.
