double hull
Ship's backup skin
A double hull is a ship design with two watertight layers—an inner and outer hull—separated by a gap.
The space between provides protection against leaks if the outer hull is breached.
After major oil spill disasters, regulations began requiring double hulls for tankers: The double-hull requirement has significantly reduced oil spills from groundings.
