out-group

Not our people

An out-group is any group perceived as separate from or opposed to one's own group.

The term comes from sociology but appears in everyday discussion of tribalism and identity politics.

Members of an out-group are seen as "them" rather than "us," often viewed with suspicion or hostility: Social media amplifies out-group animosity.

The concept pairs with in-group.
