belongingness

Need for connection

Belongingness is the feeling of being accepted and included within a group or community.

The term appears primarily in psychology and sociology, where it describes a fundamental human need—the drive to form and maintain meaningful social connections.

Maslow placed belongingness in the middle of his hierarchy of needs.

The word is more clinical than *belonging*, which serves the same purpose in ordinary speech.
