online mob
Internet harassment gang
An online mob is a large group of internet users who collectively target a person or organization with harassment, criticism, or abuse.
Unlike physical mobs, online mobs form rapidly across social media platforms, often in response to perceived wrongdoing: The online mob descended after her tweet went viral.
Participants may see themselves as delivering justice, but the cumulative effect can be devastating—doxxing, death threats, job loss.
The phenomenon blurs the line between accountability and vigilantism.
